About

I see the light!

I would have to define myself as a birthed empty nester seeking creativity as the vehicle to self discovery. So I’m doing a lot of experimenting right now. Writing, yoga, cooking, gardening, painting, sleeping in, and dancing in my dreams are just a few fun ways of figuring out what to do after the kids are gone. I am writing a food column for our local newspaper and quite frankly, loving it. It gives me an excuse to play with food! I also have a healing practice as a massage therapist in our area. I love that too. Serving people and helping them to move forward in their life or spiral out, is one high I will never tire of.

About two years ago I started a new adventure by going backwards. My son “Grop” talked me into eating the primal way. This way of eating has many names,  paleo, primal, indigenous eating, and caveman diet, are just a few. But anyway you stack it up, it is cutting out all grains, legumes, most sugars and dairy. One mostly eats lots of veggies, fruit and lean clean meats.

I was very surprised that I love this way of eating. This is a bread addict talking here. I would eat bread with everything!  So this is a huge departure for me and to love it on top of that! Very wonderful. I still have to take forays back into the grain and sugar world occasionally, just to remember how awful I feel from it. And then gladly go back to the Cavewoman Café.

On 2/28/12 I had my left knee replaced after a long and painful fight with traumatic arthritis that I contracted in a terrible skiing accident in 1979. I spent over 3 months in a wheel chair during recovery then and have struggled with my knees since. So eating paleo has decreased my inflammation dramatically. I’m sold.

This blog will be devoted to my exploration and recipes in this new life of eating and being healthy. I will be getting on my soapbox occasionally, sharing wonderful recipes and bringing you along the way as I study and learn the old ways in a new world.

I am lucky. I love my life. I appreciate that I am happily married, healthy, love my job, have three incredible children, and living in an idyllic place. My primary concern in life is the Earth and of course, my beautiful children whom the moon and stars rise in. Oh, and my cats, and my dog, and my chickens…

I started eating the Primal way last May 2010 after returning from vacation. I also have experienced the benefits of weight loss, less inflammation, more energy, etc. I was also a victim of the high carb, low fat way of eating. I look forward to hearing more about your progress.

Hi, I started eating Primal during mid january of this year (also blog about it) and so far I love it! i don’t feel hungry too often, have constant energy and my recent period had no cramps and much lighter (but I still want to know if my next one would be like that as well to really prove the benefit of Primal eating).

Congrats on your blog, column and progress in your personal journal. But I must point out that pretty much none of your recipes are actually paleo. I understand that the paleo diet is very restrictive and sometimes a little cheese, dried fruit, chocolate and whatnot is a worthwhile cheat, but maybe you should tweak your recipes a bit if your gonna call them paleo. There are many substitutes for things like rice and corn if you really want to cook paleo. Or maybe just refer to them as paleo inspired or psuedo paleo. Just saying.

      Hi Austin
Thanks for coming by! Actually I’m pretty careful not to mention Paleo, which I have studied in depth, but mostly say “primal” which is yet another faction of the “Hunter and gatherers” diet. Primal allows a wee bit more wiggle room and some occasionally eat white rice, which is considered a neutral starch, potatoes, cheese, fermented dairy, like yogurt, and chocolate. But even the most stalwart of paleo people like Rob Wolf, eat those foods too. (I hear Rob loves tequila, chocolate and the occasional corn tortilla.) I personally feel that eating fresh, organic, local corn isn’t a bad thing, whereas some true paleos wouldn’t agree. Good luck on your journey too!

Hi, Primal has become a way of life, however the word primal is very loosely used…thank you for your blog of dishes and your written word 🙂 I was in search of a biscotti recipe to ticker with by taking it apart and coming up with my version. I don’t enjoy cooking I ENJOY creating plus I hv sugar issues as well. I have a recipe from marks primal for crispy crackers which I thought could be re-invented, hence why I was looking for a Paleo biscotti..anywho, I got so distracted by your blog that my idea of creating went out the window. Your style is very similar to my taste but enough of a difference that you hv completely inspired me by over half of your creations! Thank you! I make a lot of Middle eastern dishes since I live there for many years and my hubby is from there as well. I look forward to your blogs, btw I don’t subscribe to any you are my first. This should say a lot. I don’t know if you are on Instagram and if you are I might even unknowingly be following you. Or even myfitnesspal, I am there too…continued success and eating and living well…Namaste Kim (aka Thyme4Change)
